Search by Business Type
This is much more difficult than search promotion using your business name, and will depend on how unique your area of business is. Very competitive areas, such as taxis/estate agents, will require more work and money to achieve good results compared to less frequently used professionals such as tattoo artists.

There are two approaches, and you can use both together for maximum effect - they are called Search Engine Marketing and Search Engine Optimisation:

Search Engine Marketing

Paid Search

You can pay the major search engines, such as Google and Yahoo, to advertise your business when anyone is searching for specific keywords. This is also known as “pay-per-click” because you only pay a fee when someone actually clicks on your advert and is passed across to your website.

Google Local

Another new initiative from Google is known as Google Local. When searches are made for a specific type of business in a specific town or city, additional results for 3 or 4 businesses are shown, often with a location map. You can then click on these results for a full list of all known businesses of this type in the area. Although basic listings are free, and are sourced from other business directories, you can modify your advertisement and pay for a more prominent version.

There are similar services offered from other major search engines such as Yahoo, and these are being extended to become available via mobile phones.

Search Engine Optimisation

You can make changes to your website and make other improvements which should improve its ranking so that it comes higher up on the standard search results. This is known as the “Organic” search results, and no fees are paid to Google, although SEO professionals can charge hefty fees for producing good results.
